چکیده

Iterative grid-based applications, typified by the finite difference method for solving partial differential equations [1] and spatially oriented individual-based simulations [2], are important applications for distributed computing. However, iterative grid-based distributed computations require that communication be performed at every step, which can lead to significant communication overhead. We show how a technique called SuperBoundary Exchange (SBX) for significantly reducing this overhead in finite-difference computations, first introduced in [3], can be applied to individual-based computations as well, at a cost of a somewhat coarser grid than might otherwise be necessary.

Superboundary Exchange: a Technique for Reducing Communication in Distributed Implementations of Iterative Computations

We introduce a technique for lowering the communication cost in a certain type of distributed application, in which processors perform computation in each time step and must obtain boundary data from their neighbors before they can perform the next time step. A typical example of such an application is solving diier-ential equations using the nite diierence method. Our method, which we call Sup...

Optimization of Agricultural BMPs Using a Parallel Computing Based Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithm

Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) are important measures for reducing agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution. However, selection of BMPs for placement in a watershed requires optimizing available resources to maximize possible water quality benefits. Due to its iterative nature, the optimization typically takes a long time to achieve the BMP trade-off results which is not desirable ...
